● Market Report · SEPTEMBER 21, 2026 Dakota, SD alfalfa slides $21 to $220/tonHayWire · Week of September 21, 2026 · USDA AMS · 121 verified trades · 25 markets §01 The 60-Second Read Dakota, SD came in at $220/ton, down $21, on 93 tons this week vs 192 last week, and that is the clearest give in the market this week. The national index sat at $166/ton, down 2.5% across 25 markets, so the softness was broad rather than one barn having an off day. Good alfalfa held nearly flat at $196/ton, down $1, which tells you the higher-quality end did not follow Dakota down. On both counts, buyers got the better end of the week. §02 By the Numbers National index $166/ton ▼ 2.5% week over week · 25 markets |

§03 Watch List | 01 | Rock Valley, IA low end Rock Valley, IA anchored the low at $160/ton this week. If it holds there, the $61 spread across markets stays wide. | | 02 | Pipestone, MN volume Pipestone, MN moved on very few tons last week, so its jump is hard to trust. More tons reported next week would confirm or undo it. | | 03 | Diesel print and freight Diesel at $6.53 a gallon, up $0.24, adds to delivered loads. Another step up widens the gap between local and hauled hay. |
§04 The Read Alfalfa as a class averaged $167/ton, up 4.6%, while orchard grass fell 8.1% and mixed grass 4.5%. That split says the slack sits in grass hay, not in alfalfa. The Dakota drop looks more like one market correcting on lighter volume than a turn in alfalfa itself. Advertise This slot is open.
