Rock Valley, IA had no fresh alfalfa report this week, so this week's low end came from elsewhere. | | Pipestone, MN volume. Pipestone, MN printed $184/ton, down $37, on about the same volume as last week (37 vs 40 tons), giving back the jump. | | Diesel print and freight. Diesel eased to $6.38 a gallon, down $0.15, so delivered loads got a touch cheaper instead. |
| What we’re watching this week | 1 | Dakota, SD holding flat. It held on solid tons. Another steady print would show the top end of alfalfa isn't following the average lower. | | 2 | Mixed Grass at $180. It rose 8.7 percent this week. A second firm print would show buyers shifting toward grass while alfalfa softens. | | 3 | California demand against supply. Demand runs very good on good supply there. If supply stays good, it keeps a floor under better hay without pushing it higher. |
| The Read The slack is in average alfalfa, not in hay as a whole. Good alfalfa and Dakota held, and every grass type moved up. That looks like buyers paying for quality and passing on the rest, with hay stocks tightening vs a year ago keeping better hay in demand. | Advertise This slot is open.
